An introduction to story boarding

In the previous lesson we started to learn about story boarding. We learned that to be able to make a good film, we would need to draw out in detail how each shot would go within the scene. My group and I chose a clip from insidious which we would copy in terms of story board and filming.

Above is my groups versoin of the incidious clip shown above that. It was to helpus get a better understanding of story bording. Below is the story board we made up from the incidious clip.

I have done some personal research looking into story boarding. This is one of the clips which I have found showing a great insight into how I can story board better and why I should do it in my pre-production planing.

from this clip i learnt that using an artist can realy help in making good drawings. That is why Zoe (an artist) in our group drew the story board above.

camera monuvering equipment

This video shows and reviews the different types of steady cams out on the market. It shows how s steady cam can really change a camera shot. The main part I have taken from this video is the steady and smoothness that a camera can have from adding this feature.

camara movment technology

We learnt about camera movement technology to day. We established that there are many different types of camera movement's in the previous lesson. We watched the video below on the different types of stands, rail etc. which can enable a person operating the camera to move the camera in certain ways.

I have since the lesson done lots of research into different types of stands etc. which allow for better camera movement. For an example:

  • A Steadicam:

This is a more professional set up which uses springs and pivots to enable a very crisp image when film. I allows the camera man to walk with it around and not have it cause an issue in terms of wobbliness of the camera.
This is more amateur/semi-professional set up for a Steadicam. They are a very effective tool as shown on the video below where there is a comparison of using these Steadicam and not using one at all. There is a clear difference between the too. The camera shakes fare less and the movement is much more smooth.

Diegetic and non-Diegetic sound

For Mrs bank's lesson we were asked to research diegetic sound and non diegetic sound. Below is all of the research which I found using the internet.
Diegetic sound

Diegetic sound is `Sound whose source is visible on the screen or whose source is implied to be present by the action of the film:
  • voices of characters
  • sounds made by objects in the story
  • music represented as coming from instruments in the story space ( = source music)`
Diegetic sound is any sound presented as originated from source within the film's world
Digetic sound can be either on screen or off screen depending on whatever its source is within the frame or outside the frame.
Another term for diegetic sound is actual sound

Non-diegetic sound:
Sound whose source is neither visible on the screen nor has been implied to be present in the action:
  • narrator's commentary
  • sound effects which is added for the dramatic effect
  • mood music
Non-diegetic sound is represented as coming from the a source outside story space.
The distinction between diegetic or non-diegetic sound depends on our understanding of the conventions of film viewing and listening.  We know of that certain sounds are represented as coming from the story world, while others are  represented as coming from outside the space of the story events.  A play with diegetic and non-diegetic conventions can be used to create ambiguity (horror), or to surprise the audience (comedy).
Another term for non-diegetic sound is commentary sound

I analysed a clip of doctor who which was used in a previous exam.

analysed only the doctor in this clip and how the different sounds influenced him.

Evidence of diegetic
           Rustle’s cage
           Rushing wind
           Chimes
Laser screw driver sliding on the ground

Explanation-link to character + representation
          Shows that he’s trapped.
It’s when the Dr starts to regain his strength etc. and starts to become more powerful.
It signifies the start of the Dr getting better.
shows how he’s got the power to move his screw driver.
Non diegetic evidence
          Music has ascending sequences
The music keeps developing and becoming more and more of a build-up, until the clip finishes
Explanation-link to character +representation
It gives a build-up showing how the doctor is getting better and stronger.
Showing that the doctor is going to do something which will ‘save the day’
